BottlesUp Featured in New “Discover Design” at 2011 International Home + Housewares Show

This year at the International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago, we’ll be one of 50 companies invited in to the special “Discover Design” section. This invitation-only area will be the section retailers have been asking for – a section dedicated to highly-styled products that will generate interest and excitement with their customers. We’ll be debuting our beautiful glass water bottles, made using ancient techniques in a modern glass-making facility. Our bottles, made up of a minimum of 75% recycled glass and food-grade silicone caps and ‘grippers’, highlight the beauty of glass. Our responsible design (created by a nationally-acclaimed glass artist), sourcing (100% sourced and made in North America) and packaging deliver a product that looks good, feels good and does good. Glass is naturally BPA-free and PVC-free, it won’t leach harmful chemicals, it leaves no residual odor or taste.  The bottle is designed to fit the natural grasp of the hand and has a wide mouth with a rounded lip.  Adding to that, we don’t use any plastics in our bottle or in our packaging – none, nada, zilch. By using glass instead of plastic, the use of one BottlesUp glass water bottle can keep 240 plastic bottles out of landfills every year.  Wouldn’t you agree the combination of beauty, functionality, and responsibility is one you’d like to see?

Yellow Pages Offers an Option to Opt Out

Yellow Pages now allows you to opt out.

If you’re like me, you’re one of the more than 70% of Americans who rarely or never look at the Yellow Pages – the behemoth book of business listings that comes unannounced to our doorsteps. I live in an area where I get not just one, but four different of these kinds of books every year.  Four! And while, I faithfully recycle these books, but the damage is done. They were already printed, transported and delivered wasting precious resources on a product few of us use in our homes.

Now, however, we can opt out of receiving any of the Yellow Pages that litter our doorsteps, thanks to the trade association that manages Yellow Pages.  To opt out, click over to www.yellowpagesoptout.com and register. You have to enter your address and phone number, but a note from the trade association on the page promises that this information won’t be used for any purpose other than the opt out

It’s not just by recycling plastic and using resuable glass water bottles that can help your health and the environment, you can stop paper waste from showing up at your doorstep with one easy click.

STOP Set to Launch, Builds Community

Today, while reading The Economist, I found about a new nonprofit organization working to prevent plastic pollution in the marine environment (that’s the oceans).  Science & Technology against Ocean Plastics (STOP) is set to launch in 14 days, you can sign up to become part of the community here: http://www.stopoceanplastics.org/page/Signup. Or consider attending the upcoming STOP Live Conference being held this June in Los Angeles, Calif.   I’ll be certain to follow the foundations efforts and share the solutions they (and the community) develop.

We’ve joined more than 1,300 other companies around the world to support more than 2.300 environmental organizations through our membership in 1% for the Planet.  Why? At BottlesUp, being ‘green’ isn’t just a wish or a plaque we’ve put on the wall. The Secret to Turning Consumers Green? Guilt.

Today, The Wall Street Journal published an interesting feature, “The Secret to Turning Customers Green.” Normally we pass over articles like this because they all tend to say the same thing – appeal to our sense of responsibility to the planet – but WSJ looked at a couple of programs in Washington, D.C. that are successful using a new tactic: guilt.

From the article, the case studies, and the research, it seems that a more powerful motivator if other people see our behavior.  While we’re not adding guilt to our marketing strategy, we certainly hope you’ll be seeing other people with BottlesUp glass water bottles and be motivated to make the same choice.
